What Are Immediate Prostheses?

Immediate prostheses are a temporary set of teeth placed on the same day that your natural teeth are removed. They:

Restore your smile right away
Protect the healing area beneath
Give you time to adjust physically and emotionally
Serve as a guide for your long-term, definitive prosthesis that will be made once healing has completed

Think of them as a beautifully crafted 'provisional smile' – one that we refine and perfect together over time.

Your Smile Journey – Step by Step

Consultation & Planning - We discuss your goals, assess your gum and bone health, and take photographs of your most confident past smiles to guide our aesthetic choices.
Healing Dentures Created - Based on your photos and preferences, we design your immediate partial or complete prosthesis as a prototype for your final smile. These are functional and attractive, but not yet the final polished version.
Extractions & Fitting Day - Your remaining teeth are removed, and your new immediate prosthesis is placed on the same day. You leave with a complete smile.
Healing & Adjustments - As your mouth heals and changes, your dentures may loosen slightly. We offer relining to adjust the fit. This ensures comfort and stability throughout the healing phase.
The Final Denture - After around 12 months, when healing is complete, we create your bespoke definitive prosthesis — a refined, highly aesthetic version that blends seamlessly into your smile.

Your Options after an Immediate Prosthesis

We always aim to save and support natural teeth where possible:

Option A: Mucosa-borne removable partial or complete prosthesis

Sits on top of your gums
Most common, cost-effective
May feel less stable, especially on the lower arch due to muscle attachments attaching close to or on the area where the prosthesis rests on the gums

Option B: Tooth-Supported prosthesis - a Scandinavian designed chrome prosthesis

Uses remaining teeth (like lower canines) to clip onto
Helps keeps the prosthesis stable and secure
Can preserve natural teeth and roots and reduces movement and aid the feedback of chewing when you are eating

Option C: Implant-Supported Denture

Small titanium implants placed in the jaw
The prosthesis clips onto them like a “limpet on a rock”
Most secure and natural-feeling option

Where we can, we love to keep strategic teeth — they help stabilise your prosthesis and prevent rocking or spinning.

Do they removable prostheses a while to get used to?

Absolutely. At first you may find that they feel ‘big’ and that you have a mouth full. You may salivate more than usual for the first few weeks as your natural reflex to having something that is not teeth in your mouth, is that it is something to eat. This will take a few weeks to calm down.

You will lisp when you talk for a few weeks. The best way to get round this is to wear the prosthesis for as long as possible and speak and sing your heart out to get your muscles to adapt.

Just like any prosthesis, you will need to train yourself to use it. It may be frustrating not being able to eat everything from day one but you wouldn’t expect a patient with a prosthetic leg to run a marathon the next day. Take your time, give yourself some encouragement and make sure family, who know, help you along the way.

The process of accepting and using a new prosthesis is a journey. I will be on that journey with you, along with my team and my incredibly talented technicians. Success will be down to 50% us and 50% you and your determination to get it to work.
